EXPORT DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME
Designed to help established small and medium enterprises based in Western Cape improve their knowledge of and expertise in international trade management. To create a supportive and development-focused environment that will enable emerging Western Cape exporters gain access to international markets and opportunities.The EDP is designed to help established small and medium enterprises based in Western Cape improve their knowledge of and expertise in international trade management.
The EDP aims to create a supportive and development-focused environment that will enable emerging Western Cape exporters gain access to international markets and opportunities. It also enables emerging exporters to identify their needs, overcome barriers and constraints to accessing global business opportunities and to grow their exports.
The EDP provides various development-focused services, including:
- Vocational training focusing on international trade.
- Developing export competence within local small- and medium-sized companies.
- Providing access to expertise, knowledge and networks that businesses need to grow internationally.
- Offering standardised training modules on company practice and export coaching.
- Providing up-to-date market- and sector-related information to exporters.
- Mentoring export-ready companies to strengthen their export activities.
- Offering international mentoring to help businesses meet specific needs.
- Facilitating outward missions to expose emerging exporters to foreign markets.
Export Development Programme (EDP) 2:
EDP 2 focuses on building the competitive capacity of businesses to ensure they are ready to start exporting or to expand their exports. The programme combines the theory of marketing, planning, market development strategies and international trade logistics with practical assignments based on the daily operations of small businesses. The programme encourages a high degree of interaction between participants and trainers.
EDP 2 comprises five modules:
- Module 1: Orientation to export
- Module 2: preparing to export
- Module 3: Incoterms
- Module 4: Methods of payment
- Module 5: Developing an export marketing plan
- Once complete, EDP 2 delegates will have the knowledge they need to compete in the international market.
Export Development Programme (EDP) 3:
EDP 3 is ideal for small to medium businesses that have completed the EDP 2 programme. Armed with their newly developed export development plan, the delegates on EDP 3 have the opportunity to work with a Wesgro country manager whose knowledge of the market will help to accelerate their export aspirations. The country manager’s role is to support the exporter in the implementation of their export plan. The country manager has an intimate understanding of the exporter’s desired market and uses their knowledge to connect, facilitate and guide the exporter in the right direction.
This part of the Wesgro export development programme is specifically designed for export-ready businesses to access the support they need to succeed.
Export Development Programme (EDP) 3: PUM programme
- EDP 3 delegates are eligible for the PUM programme. Developed in The Netherlands, PUM is a two-week mentoring programme designed to help SMEs in developing countries to address specific business needs. PUM comprises:
- Over 4,000 experts running over 2 200 projects every year
- A network of 250 local representatives covering 80 countries throughout Africa, Latin America, Central Europe, Asia and the Middle East
- Approximately 125 voluntary staff members who are retired business experts
- Sector co-ordinators
- Country co-ordinators
- 42 permanent staff members at PUM’s headquarters in The Hague
- 2,000 projects and/or businesses receiving consultancy annually
- PUM is an independent service with no commercial links. The programme has implemented 25 000 projects since it was established 30 years ago.
- PUM mentors help exporters to identify areas of their business that need improvement, and to address the issues identified. Mentors are selected for their ability to share the skills and knowledge the exporter’s business needs, drawing on their extensive global experience.
Export Development Programme (EDP) 3: sector-specific assistance scheme outward mission
- The EDP 3: SSAS Outward Mission programme is a dti initiative designed to help emerging exporters break into international markets. Being exposed to an international market is a good first step to trading with those markets, and ensuring that the exporter is ready for the challenge. The programme helps emerging exporters overcome barriers and constraints to accessing global market and business opportunities.
- The SSAS Outward Mission programme scans markets, identifies threats and opportunities, pricing issues and competition within the market for emerging exporters. The programme delivers various activities:
- Introducing participants to the foreign market
- Providing participants with first-hand market information
- Introducing participants to potential foreign buyers
- Providing an opportunity for participants to obtain feedback on their products directly from foreign buyers
- Providing participants with learning experiences to ensure they are export-ready
- the outward mission is designed with various outcomes for the emerging exporter:
- To be ready and have confidence to trade in the international market
- Have a clear understanding of the foreign market visited
- Understand what opportunities exist in the foreign market visited
- Make introductions to foreign buyers
- Understand how to pitch their product for the foreign market in question
